Drive the legendary Transfagarasan, explore stunning landscapes, and discover hidden gems of history nestled in the heart of the mountains.
Get ready for an unforgettable Transfagarasan road trip on the famous winding road that crosses the Carpathian Mountains. In the light of Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear, the road became “the best driving road in the world”. Undoubtedly, this breathtaking route takes you through stunning landscapes, sharp curves, and impressive rocky mountain peaks.
I joined the Top Gear crew in 2009, and I can confirm – the thrill and the beauty of this road are unmatched.
At over 2,000 meters altitude, we’ll reach the Bâlea Glacier Lake, nestled in the heart of the Bâlea Natural Reserve. Whether you choose a relaxing stroll around the lake or a short hike for panoramic views, this is a moment to connect with nature.
Moreover, on our way back, we’ll explore two hidden heritage gems:
The Cistercian Abbey in Cârța, one of the oldest constructions in Transylvania, with its fascinating blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture
The fortress of Cisnădioara, perched on St. Michael’s Hill, which offers an idyllic view over the traditional Saxon village below
Transfagarsan Road Trip blends adventure, scenic drives, and cultural heritage into one perfect day. Therefore, this is a must for those who love adventure, nature, and the stories that shaped this land.
Very important to know – the Transfăgărășan road is fully open to cars from mid-June to early November, depending on weather conditions. Thus, during the rest of the year, the high-altitude section is closed due to snow and ice. However, we can still enjoy the experience by driving up to Bâlea Waterfall and then taking the cable car to Bâlea Lake – a scenic ride and a great adventure in itself!
Before your trip, it’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly, as conditions in the mountains can change quickly.
In summertime, for adventurous travelers and nature lovers, there’s also the option of a guided hike above Bâlea Lake.
Overall, winter transforms the area into a spectacular wonderland. While the road is closed beyond Bâlea Waterfall, the journey becomes even more adventurous and scenic. Hence, we’ll drive through snowy forests and dramatic valleys up to the base of the mountain, where we take the cable car ride to Bâlea Lake.
In any case, at over 2,000 meters, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery, and in the heart of winter, you’ll have the chance to visit the unique Hotel of Ice, built entirely from snow and ice right next to the glacial lake.
