There was a time — not too long ago — when winters in Transylvania meant thick snow, freezing air, and the pure joy of childhood.
Growing up in Sibiu, I remember those magical snowy days with such clarity. Our street wasn’t paved, and cars were a rare sight. When the snow settled in, it transformed into a giant skating rink. We’d spend the whole day outside, building snowmen, sledding, and laughing through endless snowball fights. The cold didn’t matter. We’d come home with frozen clothes and red cheeks — but always with big smiles.
In the past two decades, though, winters have changed. Climate change is no longer a theory — it’s visible, tangible. Snow has become a rare treasure, even in the mountains. The ski season in Păltiniș (just an hour from Sibiu) has shortened significantly, relying heavily on artificial snow to keep the slopes open for a couple of months.

Across Europe, including Romania, we’ve finally had a real winter. Snow fell again, generously. And this time, I got to enjoy it not just for myself, but through the eyes of my son.
We wandered through the countryside, walked on snowy village roads, and listened to the peaceful stillness of nature — a kind of stillness that only winter knows.
Sibiu looked like a scene from a fairytale — colorful houses wearing snow-white coats, quiet streets, warm cafés, and cozy moments.
These are the kind of days that feel timeless. A return to simplicity. A return to essence.
Winter is not the most common time to explore Transylvania, but that’s what makes it special. It’s quiet. Intimate. Authentic. Whether you come for a city break in Sibiu, a walk in a snow-covered Saxon village, or a hike in the Carpathian mountains, you’ll discover a softer, slower, more poetic side of the region.
