Scattered across this beautiful countryside are the famous Saxon villages of Transylvania, many of them home to impressive fortified churches. Some are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites or awarded the Europa Nostra Prize for restoration. These villages still preserve their traditional architecture, colorful houses, and quiet rhythm of rural life.

A new teahouse in the village square has recently become a favorite stop for travelers.
Perhaps the most famous Saxon village in Romania, Viscri, has become a symbol of rural heritage preservation. This charming village is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, thanks to its beautifully preserved fortified church and traditional architecture.
Viscri gained international attention when King Charles III supported restoration projects in the village through the Mihai Eminescu Trust. Today visitors can explore the church, walk along quiet village streets, and visit local craft workshops.
The surrounding hills are perfect for relaxing walks or countryside hikes, and several small guesthouses welcome travelers who want to experience village life in traditional Saxon homes. Local food, handmade souvenirs, and the warm atmosphere of the village make Viscri a truly special place.
Less known but incredibly charming, Alma Vii is one of the hidden gems of the Transylvanian Highlands. The village received the prestigious Europa Nostra Award for the remarkable restoration of its fortified church.
The fortress itself is spectacular. You can climb up the defensive towers and enjoy breathtaking views over the surrounding hills and forests. The peaceful countryside around the village is ideal for easy hikes and nature walks.
A wonderful local experience awaits you inside the fortress walls, where a small gastronomic point serves delicious traditional dishes prepared with local ingredients.
Located just a few kilometers from Biertan, Richiș is a beautiful Saxon village connected to Biertan by the Via Transilvanica trail, making it perfect for a scenic countryside hike.
The fortified church in Richiș hides fascinating stories and symbols, including the mysterious Green Man, an ancient symbol connected to nature and rebirth.
The village has become increasingly popular among travelers looking for authentic experiences. You can enjoy local gastronomy, stay in beautifully restored guesthouses and even relax at the nearby Zen Barn Spa, a unique countryside wellness retreat.
The small village of Criț is another wonderful stop along the Via Transilvanica. Surrounded by gentle hills and peaceful landscapes, Criț offers a glimpse into the rural life of the Saxon communities.
