An escape through forest trails and meadows

This Transfagarasan road trip is one of the most spectacular journeys you can experience in Romania, taking you deep into the Carpathian Mountains.

Embark on one of the most scenic ridge hikes in the Făgăraș Mountains, often called the Alps of Transylvania, where nature reveals its raw and majestic beauty. Starting at Bâlea Lake, this circular route takes us above the famous Transfăgărășan road, offering dramatic panoramic views at every turn.

The trail follows a spectacular line of mountain ridges and alpine meadows, leading us to three main peaks in one day: Șaua Doamnei, Vârful Paltinu, and Vârful Iezeru Caprei, with the option to reach the impressive Vânătoarea lui Buteanu, one of the highest accessible summits in Romania.

Along the way, we pass Glacial Lake Capra, nestled beneath high rocky peaks, and walk near alpine sheepfolds, with chances to spot marmots, wild goats.  In early summer or autumn, the delicate bloom of rhododendron covering the slopes.

This is a moderately challenging hike, perfect for adventurous spirits and mountain lovers eager to experience the stunning landscapes, fresh alpine air, and untamed beauty of Transylvania’s most iconic peaks.

The Transfăgărășan gained international fame after being featured on the Top Gear show, where Jeremy Clarkson called it “the best road in the world.” I was even lucky to meet the Top Gear crew here during their filming in 2009.
